chandew.pdfThe Sweet Dews of Ch'an6040 viewsReverend Cheng Kuan

Ch'an or Zen is the outcome of meditation. There are two 'right'or 'highest' purposes of Ch'an. The first purpose is to achieve Dhyana. Dhyana is a combination of relaxation, concentration and calmness or tranquility. The second purpose is, using your very composed and tranquil mind, to observe clearly all the dharmas or phenomena externally and internally. As an outcome of Dhyana, you will be able to observe these phenomena very clearly because your mental mirror is very clear, for there are no more disturbances to veil it. Out of these observations will come Transcendental Wisdom, which in Sanskrit is called Prajna.

This Brahmavihara Dhamma (Divine Abidings) expounded by the late Venerable Mahasi Sayadaw, reveals the systematic method of developing Metta, loving-kindness towards all beings and the way to lead a life of holiness. The style of presentation and the informative materials contained therein stand witness to the depth and wealth of spiritual and scriptural knowledge of the eminent author. Bodhidharma's Gate: Ch'an (Zen) in fact is an impregnable fortress, without a gate to enter. Suppose there is really a gate, that gate would simply be a method of training to be taken up in the Ch'an tradition. That is why when a monk asked Master Zhao Zhou(778-897: "Has a dog Buddha-nature or not?" Master Zhao Zhou retorted: "Wu". Later on,this Gongan (koan) formed part of a specific approach in the Ch'an School. The author,Venerable Jing Hui is a Ch'an Master and a vice-president of the Buddhist Association of China.

Arahattamagga.pdfArahattamagga, Arahattaphala: The Path to Arahantship5017 viewsAt present, all that is left of Buddhism are the words of the Buddha. Only his teachings ñ the scriptures ñ remain. Please be aware of this. Due to the corruption caused by the defiling nature of the kilesas, true spiritual principles are no longer practiced in present-day Buddhism. As Buddhists, we constantly allow our minds to be agitated and confused, engulfed in mental defilements that assail us from every direction. They so overpower our minds that we never rise above these contaminating influences, no matter how hard we try. The vast majority of people are not even interested enough to try: They simply close their eyes and allow the onslaught to overwhelm them. They don't even attempt to put up the least amount of resistance. Since they lack the mindfulness needed to pay attention to the consequences of their thoughts, all their thinking and all they do and say are instances of the kilesas giving them a beating. They surrendered to the power of these ruinous forces such a long time ago that they now lack any motivation to restrain their wayward thoughts...
